Which Wordpress Code Highlighter?

This is the question I had to ask myself and after testing various different options I came up without an answer….

I thought the best way would be to show some screenshots of how they worked straight from the box ‘if they did’, Yes folks that was my main requirement that it worked straight from the box no hacking of css, adjusting of widths here and there, no i want to plug it in and it works!

The code snippet I used in the examples is Thanks to Themeforest: 9 Useful Snippets for Your WordPress Functions.

WP-Syntax

Says compatible to Wordpress 2.8 which is always nice!

wpsyntax2 Which Wordpress Code Highlighter?

Wordpress Code Snippet

upto WP 2.7

This one adds a code section within the wp-admin to add your code into the post and choose the language, problem being the code will only appear at the end of the post and the black lines in between are just too annoying…

wpcodesnippet Which Wordpress Code Highlighter?

Simple Code Embed

upto WP 2.8

Add code through custom fields, the code snippets are custom fields and you add the code to the places in your posts by using CODE1, CODE2 etc… limited to 5 codesnippets per post/page.

OK should have read the instructions properly before attempting this one ;) server side php DOESN’T work only HTML, XHTML, JavaScript, etc. whatever etc. means it doesn’t mean php!

Syntax Highlighter and Code Colorizer for Wordpress

upto WP 2.1, er what? it was updated 5th May 2009 so I thought I’d give it a try…

prettifier Which Wordpress Code Highlighter?

um nope that didn’t work! NEXT!

WP-SynHighlight

upto WP 2.8

I tested this and it seems it wants me to use the visual editor and use ‘codesyntax’ tags but I didn’t want to and there didn’t seem to be any clear and simple alternative to not using the visual editor, so it’s a fail from me.

So I’m still on the hunt! To be honest the first one would probably work great if I just added something into the css file to give a white background for the code.

Have any suggestions?

Update: Trying

Google Syntax Highlighter for WordPress

Nope that didn’t work…should have known as it said compatible upto WP 2.2.1…..

OK Back to the 1st plugin tried WP-Syntax and time for some CSS changes…

Not sure why but comments don’t seem to be working but only on this post ;(

Anyway still haven’t found what I’m looking for but will continue the search in a new post later next week!
